Onset Of Action
The goal of therapy for a patient with RDS is to reduce the amount and length of exposure to supplemental oxygen and high ventilatory pressures during their course of treatment; thus rapid onset of action is a benefit if managed appropriately. The common belief is that prolonged exposure to oxygen and high ventilatory pressures lead to more damage to the lungs of premature infants. Curosurf provides rapid oxygenation within 5 minutes, as documented in three randomized clinical trials.. This marked improvement in oxygenation did not lead to an increased incidence of adverse reactions including pulmonary hemorrhage and pneumothorax.
DOSING COMPARISONS
Independent studies evaluating surfactants for treatment of RDS have been
conducted. In the trial comparing Curosurf and Survanta, a higher
percentage of infants treated with Curosurf required only one dose as
compared to Survanta.
In the trial comparing Survanta and Infasurf, a higher percentage of
infants treated with Survanta required only one dose as compared to
Infasurf.
Clinical studies have not evaluated if low volume results in superior safety or efficacy on clinically relevant endpoints.
